What is a Liposome?
Liposomes are tiny, spherical vesicles composed of phospholipid bilayers that mimic cell membranes. Liposomal structures will encapsulate ingredients, such as nutrients or functional compounds, enhancing HMB delivery and absorption into cells.
Due to the biocompatible nature, liposomes serve as highly effective carriers for various substances, improving their bioavailability and stability, for optimum delivery to tissues. The encapsulation technology offers protection of the active ingredients, preventing degradation before ingredients reach their intended target. Vesta has developed LipoQuest® to harness liposomal technology.
Why Liposomal UltraHMB™?
Beyond the advantages of LipoQuest® described above, liposomal UltraHMB™ addresses HMB's short half-life in the body. The main limitation of HMB is that, once ingested, it is typically cleared within two to three hours. Several doses a day are usually needed to keep blood levels in the desired range. This is where LipoQuest® comes into play. Oral liposomes may slow the release of HMB, which could allow formulators to offer once- or twice-daily dosing. These dosing options offer a true differentiator in a crowded marketplace.
The second advantage of liposomal UltraHMB™ is a better consumer experience. On its own, HMB-Ca has a chalky, bitter-sour taste that many people find unpleasant in drinks. Some may skip a day or two, discontinue consuming it after a while, or decide not to use the product at all. Liposomal encapsulation masks this taste, freeing formulators to develop new combinations without worrying about how HMB tastes. An improved ingestion experience will help strengthen client retention and customer satisfaction.
