HMB for Athletic Performance: What the Research Shows

As a small, water-soluble organic acid, HMB has been shown, study after study, to become bioavailable fairly quickly after ingestion. In terms of pharmacokinetics, the two most popular forms (HMB-Ca and HMB-FA) are comparable. The plasma concentration of the HMB ion, regardless of the source, peaks within 2 hours after an oral dose.

Given HMB’s dual muscle-targeting mechanisms, it is little surprise that over the past two decades researchers have explored its potential benefits for athletes engaged in endurance and strength training. A few selected examples follow.

Finding
HMB-FA resulted in increased total strength (bench press, squat, and deadlift combined) over the 12-week training…; a greater increase in vertical jump power…; and increased lean body mass gain… in HMB-FA- and placebo-supplemented groups, respectively. During the overreaching cycle, HMB-FA attenuated increases in CK… and cortisol… in the HMB-FA- and placebo-supplemented groups, respectively.

What that means
When combined with a high-intensity, frequently undulating periodized training model, HMB-FA may increase lean body mass, muscle hypertrophy, strength, and power. During the overreaching phase of training, HMB-FA is believed to prevent the declines in performance typically observed in this period.

Finding
Following HMB supplementation, fat-free mass increased … with a simultaneous reduction of fat mass … in comparison to placebo. In turn, after HMB supplementation, the following indicators increased significantly in comparison to the placebo: the time to reach ventilatory threshold …, threshold load … and the threshold HR …, as well as anaerobic peak power …, average power …, maximum speed … and post-exercise lactate concentrations.

What that means
For aerobic capacity, this study showed that HMB significantly improved endurance markers, and the same held for anaerobic performance. In other words, HMB may promote beneficial body-composition changes and enhance both aerobic and anaerobic capacity in combat athletes.

Finding
Following HMB supplementation, VO2 max increased … significantly … in comparison to its reduction after PLA. In turn, at the ventilatory threshold, a longer time was required to reach this point, while threshold load and threshold heart rate increased. After HMB supplementation, fat mass decreased. In relation to the initial values after HMB supplementation, the refusal time to continue in the progressive test was extended, maximum load and anaerobic peak power increased.

What that means
The paper concluded that during endurance training HMB intake has a positive effect on the aerobic capacity of endurance-trained rowers. It may also lead to fat loss and could potentially boost peak anaerobic power in athletes.
