UltraHMB™ is Vesta’s branded HMB-Ca (β-Hydroxy β-MethylButyrate Calcium). It is a clinically researched, food-grade nutritional ingredient for sports nutrition, healthy aging, and athletic performance formulations. It is non-GMO and allergen-free.

Naturally, only about 5% of the amino acid leucine is metabolized into HMB — a modest endogenous production. That translates into 0.2–0.4 g/day of new HMB on a typical diet, some of which is consumed is cholesterol biosynthesis.

No food contains any meaningful amount of HMB itself. Rather, its contribution of HMB arises only indirectly, as a byproduct of leucine. Commercially available HMB is almost exclusively prepared synthetically, first as the free acid and then as the calcium salt.

As a supplemental ingredient, HMB is usually provided in two main forms: the free acid (HMB-FA) and the calcium salt (HMB-Ca). The latter dominates the market because HMB-FA is a liquid at room temperature, which poses challenges not only for formulation but for storage and handling as well.

At a molecular level, our current understanding points to a “dual action.” Via the ubiquitin–proteasome pathway, HMB attenuates muscle protein breakdown, while via the mTOR signaling pathway, it supports protein synthesis. The purported clinical benefits therefore center upon muscle preservation and recovery.

In literature, the strongest evidence is most consistently associated with older adults with sarcopenia and with muscle-wasting or disuse conditions. There are also publications in favor of recommending HMB to trained athletes, especially those seeking an aerobic boost or a change in body composition during intense or overreaching training.

Emerging research suggests HMB may support neuronal growth, memory, and learning while helping reduce protein aggregation associated with cognitive decline (Paidi et al., Cell Reports, 2023). All published studies to date have been conducted in vivo in animals but not humans.
At 3 g/day, HMB has a strong safety profile: no consistent adverse effects have been reported in healthy adults over the durations tested. HMB has been studied for multiple decades and is generally considered safe as a supplement. However, long-term and sub-population data are more limited. When in doubt, consult a professional.
Across most clinical trials, the figure cited most often is 3 g/day, typically split into multiple servings and largely independent of the make-up of the participant group. Consequently, this is also the dose behind most health claims. At lower doses, the effect is much less clear.
HMB is generally taken across meals, as long as the daily 3 g dose is met. Some protocols place a dose near training, given HMB’s absorption profile (time to peak ~2 hours).
